Every meal at our orphanage is more than just food—it’s an experience of love, teamwork, and tradition. Recently, little Hannah took on the special task of preparing Pepper Kala, a beloved Liberian snack that fills homes with warmth and joy.
What is Pepper Kala?
Pepper Kala, or spicy fried dumplings, is a classic Liberian street food known for its crispy golden-brown exterior and soft, fluffy inside. It is made with a simple batter of flour, sugar, yeast, and a touch of spice—usually a pinch of pepper to give it that signature kick. These small bites are then deep-fried to perfection, making them a delicious treat that pairs well with any meal or is enjoyed as a snack on its own.
Hannah’s Kala-Making Experience
Cooking at Hope 4 Liberia is a shared responsibility, and Hannah, along with her team, took on the challenge of making Pepper Kala for the entire family. Dressed in red aprons, they worked with focus and determination—mixing the batter, shaping the dough, and carefully frying each piece over an open fire. It was a moment of learning and laughter, as everyone played a role in creating something special.
For Hannah, cooking is more than just a chore; it’s a way to serve, to give, and to connect with her family. Seeing the smiles as the golden dumplings piled up in the bowl was a reward in itself.

More Than Just a Meal
At Hope 4 Liberia, food is a reminder of God’s provision and the joy of togetherness. Whether it’s preparing a simple meal or a favorite Liberian dish like Pepper Kala, every moment in the kitchen is an opportunity to teach responsibility, build relationships, and celebrate culture.
As Hannah proudly presented the finished Pepper Kala, the excitement in the air was undeniable. The children gathered, eager to enjoy the warm, crispy treats. With each bite, there was laughter, gratitude, and the sweet taste of home.

Food brings us together, but love makes the meal truly special.
