More Than a Volunteer: Amelia Kollie, Our “Big Sister” and UNO Princess

In July, we had the joy of welcoming Amelia Kollie to serve with us — and in just a short time, she became a beloved part of our Hope 4 Liberia family.

Amelia is a Grade 9 student from Margibi. She’s also a double orphan, currently living with her older sister while continuing her education. Despite the challenges she has faced, Amelia shines with strength, warmth, and a heart ready to serve.

During her stay, she supported our kitchen staff with steady dedication — but her real impact went far beyond that. To our girls, she was simply “Big Sister.” She stepped into their world like she had always been part of it — offering guidance, laughter, and that kind of older-sibling honesty that our girls soaked up like sunlight. Watching her gently counsel them, or cheer them on in games, reminded us how leadership doesn’t always wear a title — sometimes it just shows up and serves.

To the staff, Amelia wasn’t just helpful — she was family. Bright, talkative (in the best way), and endlessly engaging, she bonded with everyone through shared meals and late-night games of UNO. In fact, no night was complete without Amelia at the UNO table — laughing, competing, and making sure there were snacks for everyone. She even planned ahead and set aside “UNO food” — extra bites she saved during the day just for game time. It became a tradition, and honestly, we’re still not sure what we’ll miss more: her fierce UNO strategy, or the snacks she so thoughtfully prepared.

Amelia may be young, but her impact was deep. She quietly led, joyfully gave, and reminded all of us that being an orphan does not define your limits — it can shape your strength.

We are so grateful for Amelia’s time with us. As she returns to school in September, we pray for continued growth, favor, and joy in her journey. The kitchen will miss her helping hands. The staff will miss her laughter. And our girls will deeply miss their Big Sister.
